New York Region Celebrates 2011 Champions

February in Connecticut is usually a winter wonderland and it was with that idea in mind that New York Region Activities Chair, Terry Dunne, decided to hold a combined Winter Black Ice Autocross (Hosted by the staff at Skip Barber's Lime Rock Park Race Circuit) and the 2011 Awards Dinner/Celebration held at the very nice Wake Robin Inn in Lakeville, Connecticut. The only problem was that no one cleared the date with Mother Nature.
It's not what you may think...the actual weather for the event day was BEAUTIFUL. And there in was the problem. After weeks of some of the most extreme winter weather that the northeast had experienced in the past century, the northeast corner of Connecticut was subject to a thaw/freeze cycle that conspired to give the grounds crew at Lime Rock fits in attempting to provide a useable surface for the 40 pre-registerd students. A literally last minute  call went out to the Chair canceling the event at the track but the afternoon dinner party would have to go on. Unfortunately, a large number of the track portion of attendees chose not to attend just the festivities at Wake Robin...and that was their loss.
For those of you that have not enjoyed the Wake Robin Inn you really need to make it a destination. It's Victorian exterior hints at the very elegant interior and warm feeling that greets you the moment you walk through the door. The Bar/Pub is well stocked and cozy itself. And the staff is well exercised in providing a constant flow of delicious appitizers predicating the main course. They were even very friendly in allowing folks to take ample doggy bags home with them (although I don't even OWN a dog!) To say the cusine was top notch is understating the cooks efforts.
Even though this was a much smaller gathering it was still enjoyed by all who attended. Bart Carlavaro, New York Region Chief of Pit, accompanied by better half Linda Louie - NYR Chief of T&S, was on hand to present long time NYR friend and past Chief of Pit, Clark W. Nicholls with the NNJR Pit Worker of the Year. Outgoing Chief of Solo II, Arthur Emerson, was presented with a plaque of gratitude for his hard work over the past half decade and New York Region Activities Chair and Membership Chair, Terry Dunne, was presented with a plaque recognizing the efforts of organizing the Skip Barber event and the banquet. G.W. Henderson was selected to be Master of Ceremonies at the 11th hour and 59th minute and still managed to mix metaphores and forget names, some of whom he had known for decades! But thankfully those folks took it all in great strides. Dave Perlman, NYR Director was on hand with his lovely wife Sharon (who also helped out at registration with Susan Blackwell) to provide a 'State of the Region' report and, in case you are wondering, we are in good shape...at least for now as the Regioanal Executive, Chris Morales, has just gone to the national convention in LAS VEGAS. We'll see what the treasury looks like when...and IF he returns! (Humor)
The afternoon progressed with the awards for Excellence In The NYR 2011 Solo II Season where some very nice hardware (designed by NYR series sponsor Flip Image) was presented to this season's winners. G.J. Dixon (Pro Class), Fiona Koper (Ladies Class), Jonathan Fischer (Novice), and Jonathan Cohen (Prepared) joined others in attendance to pick up their seasno winning trophies. Keep checking this site for the complete 2010 standings.
A lot of discussion regarding the other divisions of the region that had in the past presented awards at this ceremony, Region Worker of The Year, Driver of The Year, Region Series Champion, Region Hall of Fame, and other signifigant awards, was had and whether a monthly region meeting should be re-instated to help return the region to a level of prominance it had for so long also was touched on.
So if you didn't make this gathering you missed out on a lot of things. Ask those that were there. Congrats to all of the recipients and good luck in the coming season.
